Chlorogenic acid
Chlorogenic acid is an ester of caffeic acid and (-)-quinic acid. It is an important Lignin bio synthetic intermediate. Chlorogenic acid is light greenish yellow powder ,soluble in hot water. Its chemical formula is (1S,3R,4R,5R)-3-{[(2Z)-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)prop-2-enoyl]oxy}-1,4,5-trihydroxy cyclohexanecarboxylic acid and molecular formula is C16H18O9.
This compound, long known as an antioxidant, also slows down the release of glucose into the blood stream after a meal.
Source
Chlorogenic Acid extracted from the seeds of Coffea arabica.
Coffea arabica plants grow in between 9 -12 m tall, and have an open branching system; the leaves are opposite, simple elliptic-ovate to oblong, glossy dark green. The flowers are white and grow in axillary clusters. The fruit is a drupe (commonly called a "berry") maturing bright red to purple and typically contain two seeds (the coffee 'bean').
Coffea arabica is a species of coffea originally indigenous to the mountains of Yemen in the Arabian Peninsula. It is also cultivated in the southwestern highlands of Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan.
Pharmacology
Chlorogenic acid derivatives are identified as novel, potent, and specific inhibitors of the hepatic glucose 6-phosphate translocase. Inhibition of the glucose 6-phosphate translocase leads to a decrease in hepatic glucose production, rendering chlorogenic acid derivatives as potential novel therapeutics in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
Since free radicals are believed to play a role in the development of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer , the consumption of Chlorogenic Acid may protect against these diseases.
Chlorogenic acid found in Green Coffee Extract promote fat loss by blocking gastric and pancreatic lipase.
Therapeutic Applications
  • Chlorogenic Acid is long known as an Antioxidant.
  • Chlorogenic Acid contribute to the prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
  • Chlorogenic Acid is also used for weight loss.
  • Chlorogenic Acid may inhibit inflammation and thereby reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and other inflammatory diseases in postmenopausal women.
Dosage
Since green coffee bean extract typically contains about 30% chlorogenic acids, this works out to a dose of about 60 mg of chlorogenic acids daily.
